STAND UP COMEDY COURSE
Our Stand Up Comedy Course is run by a headline comedian who performs regularly at famous comedy clubs such as ‘Jongleurs’ and ‘Up The Creek’. As our tutor works weekly at these and other large comedy club venues, he has direct contact with comedy promoters, enabling students the chance of fast track progression to become a professional comedian and work in well known comedy clubs across the UK. All our tutors hold UK Adult Teaching Certificates (City & Guilds 7704).
Some quotes from the major comedy bookers who came to our last showcase
Paul venue booker - UP THE CREEK 'Great night of comedy and each of them performed like a pro - amazing - you wouldn't know this was their first ever gig and how well trained to be able to play big comedy club like this and know how to play the room'
Katherine Webb - THE COMEDY COMPANY 'Each act had a well crafted 5 minutes and their performance skills and stagecraft was faultless' I noted some names to come and perform at our pro comedy nights in the new season'
Kevin Precious - BARNSTOMERS COMEDY CLUB CHAIN ' The mark had been set high with the first of these brand new acts and maintained throughout the night '
Mike Fox - BROMLEY & CROYDON COMEDY CLUB NIGHTS & THE THAMSHED 'Just watching how each of them handled a mic and conducted themselves on stage - you could see they had all been so professionally trained'
Maff Brown - PROMOTER & 'CHORTLE' COMEDY CLUB OF THE YEAR WINNER 'Excellent'
Our May students had their showcase on Tuesday 14th July at 'Up The Creek' Comedy Club. It was great to see so many people coming to this performance - 172 tickets sold! . Also the booker for 'Barnstomers Comedy Clubs (12 professional theatre clubs around SE England) and the promotor of the famous Bracknell Comedy Club, the UK's longest running club and 'The Comedy Company' were VIP guests along with two other major comedy promotors and our new acts secured some great new bookings at some nice comedy clubs.
Runs: Monday 7pm – 10pm for 6 weeks - in the Greenwich area of London
Plus your final showcase will be at the famous purpose built comedy club 'UP THE CREEK' in Greenwich with a well known MC and also a circuit headliner and just our students on the bill!
This exciting course is aimed at beginners. You will learn the art of writing and performing your own material and will present small bits of your work each week in front of the class. At the end of the course your finely tuned 5 minute set will not be a daunting prospect when it comes to be showcased to an invited audience of freinds and indutry professionals at week 7.
Previous experience – None
Entry audition - None
Extra work required away from class – Yes, this includes learning your material, writing material and preparation for the next class and also visiting at least once, a new act comedy night and one professional comedy club as a group.
Materials you will need – Digital or audio voice recorder (costing approx £25) a pen and lots of paper! You will be given a course book and learning notes and homework each week – approx 1 to 2 hours home study needed each week.
Class work – this will be split into three sections each week – material writing, performance skills and theory and discussion.
What will I have at the end of the course? – Each student will have a tight 5 minute set of their own material from about 20 minutes of subject material which they can take to comedy clubs to try out and build on to enter our industry. Some attend the course just to ticked a ‘to do’ box in things they want to achieve in life and wish to take it no futher then doing one 5 minute stand up routine! We are easy either way. Remember - stand up is rated in the top three of the most scary things to have a go at along with parachuting & bungee jumping. We will take aware that fear!
Can you make a career from just attending this course – Yes! Your tutor did the same sort of course 12 years ago and now earns between £400 - £1000 per week performing at comedy clubs all over the UK and headlines weekly for the three major comedy chains in the UK which are Jongleurs with 15 clubs, Mirth Control with 44 clubs and The Comedy Club Ltd with 55 clubs plus lucrative corporate and TV work (many comics are earning way more then this, into millions in fact!).
So what is the advantage of going on a course over getting out and just doing stand up comedy in clubs? Easy – You make your mistakes in class and find out what is funny or not in class by doing it to the others in the room. Instead of being heckled when it goes wrong as may happen in a comedy club, here you just accept and try it again, maybe restructuring the joke or adding to it for the following week. You also learn how to generate material and performance skills. Everyone who comes onto this course has a good idea what they want to say on stage before they even start, most end up with a completly different 5 minute set to perform at the end. Even now, if considering the course, you have some ideas of the things you want to say in your routine rattling around in your head. Come on the course and lets show you how you expand those thoughts and bring in new ones to complement them.
I want to learn to write comedy but don't want to perform? – Why not try instead our Script writing course which covers elements of sketch, sitcom and comedy writing. Also on that course you get to see your work performed by professional actors and performers. Click HERE for more information.
What is the minimum age for this course? – 18 and there is no maximum age.
I have never done any stand up before? – great, this course is for you!
I have had a go at stand up and now want to home my art? – again great, this course is for you as you will learn new things from day one plus you will learn a new 5 minute set.
What jokes will I be given to practice with? – None, everything you say on stage will come from you alone. Trust us, you have the material in you already, we simply show you how to bring it to the surface.
I want to try magic, character comedy or music in my act? Great! Let’s show you how to make it funny!
Who will be at the showcase at the end of the course? It will be open to your friends and family plus some comedy club bookers and promoters.

Below is a film made by comedian Domanic Frisby and most UK comics have watched it and it explains the comedy circuit in the UK in a nutshell - very funny! Basically it is the UK comedy circuit laughing at themselves
Also in the second video is one of our tutors, who believe it or not 'Off stage' is 100% removed from the stage persona and before entering the world of stand up was an airline pilot. In fact you can see him flying in the third video
